Throughout 2019 we participated in the “Desafío Pro Bono” (Pro Bono Challenge), an annual contest organized by Chile’s Fundación Pro Bono that gives law students an opportunity to work on real-life cases with the support and resources of major law firms, in order to develop long-term, replicable solutions to important social issues.
A team of our lawyers worked with Athiara Cristino and Mauricio Henríquez, students at the Universidad Andrés Bello, in their project named ‘El Abandono del los Cabellos Grises’ (The Neglect of the Grey Haired), which aimed to provide legal support to healthcare facilities and their elderly patients who have been discharged from the hospital but who have no home or family to return to.
The project was carried out at the San José de Maipo Hospital near Santiago. Athiara and Mauricio provided legal advice to patients through legal clinic sessions held at the hospital, as well as directly to hospital workers through a series of presentations. The students also met with government representatives for services for older citizens (“Servicio Nacional del Adulto Mayor”).
A formal protocol intended to provide guidance to hospital establishments and their elderly patients was delivered to the Chilean government in early 2020.
We are very pleased to announce that the project was selected as the winner of the Pro Bono Challenge in 2019. Congratulations to Athiara and Mauricio for all their hard work.
